NEO ACRYLIC WALL PRIMER
    WATERBASED ALKALINE RESISTANT PRIMER
    PRODUCT CODE: AP00
TECHNICAL DATA SHEET NO. 03-Primers & Undercoats
    JULY 2009

  1. Product Description

New generation water based, all acrylic, alkaline resistant primer especially formulated to give the best long term performance for the total system. Provides a very strong and stable base for over-coating with a wide range of NEO Paints’ water and solvent based products. Based on an acrylic copolymer resin emulsion with outstanding humidity and alkaline resistance.
  2. Application Areas

    • Interior and exterior use.
    • As a primer for plaster, hardboard and fibre cement walls.
    • Due to its high resin content, this primer forms a strong and stable substrate for nearly all wall paints, water or solvent based, as well as textured coatings.
    • Essential for all new plasterwork.
    • The primer is also highly suitable for dry wall constructions and on ceiling boards.
    • Can be used as a first coat for interior use on galvanised roof sheeting. Due to its acrylic base, the product has an excellent adhesion on degreased galvanised metal.
  3. Product Features

    • Alkaline, water and humidity resistant.
    • Excellent adhesion and hiding power.
    • Low odour.
    • Can be top coated with a wide range of NEO Paints’ water and solvent based products.
    • The primer is highly alkaline and humidity resistant whilst still permeable for water vapour.
    • NEO Acrylic Wall Primer serves as primer for PVA emulsion paint.
    • Can be applied within a few days after plastering.
    • The primer can be over-coated within 3-4 days.
    • For enamel paints, the period before application should be at least 14-21 days because humidity cannot penetrate such coatings.
    • In coastal regions the application of enamel paint on new plaster should be avoided completely for at least 6 months until the walls are really dry.
    • One coat of NEO Acrylic Wall Primer is applied for best results.
  4. Product Data

Resin Base Acrylic copolymer resin emulsion
Drying Time Touch dry: ± 30 minutes
    Hard dry: 3 – 4 hours
    Film Thickness 40 –50 microns
Spreading Rate 5-7 square metres per litre.
Although the spreading rate will vary with porosity and type of substrate, for uncoated new surfaces work on 5-7 square metres per litre for the first coat and 7-9 square metres per litre for subsequent coats and when applied to sealed, previously painted substrates.
  5. Application Details

    • Mixing Always stir well before use with a flat paddle.
    • Application Method Brush or roller application or airless spray.
    • Thinning NEO Acrylic Wall Primer is ready for use un-thinned; thinning with water will reduce its hiding power.
    • Cleaning Water.
    • Application • Stir well before use.
    • With brush, roller or airless spray, apply a generous coat of NEO Acrylic Wall Primer.
    • Allow to dry 2-3 hours before applying topcoat.
    • NEO Acrylic Wall Primer is ready for use un-thinned; thinning with water will reduce its hiding power.
    • Clean up application equipment with clean tap water.
    • Do not apply before 09:00 and after 16:00 in the winter.
    • Although the spreading rate will vary with porosity and type of substrate, for uncoated new surfaces work on 5-7 square metres per litre for the first coat and 7-9 square metres per litre for subsequent coats and when applied to sealed, previously painted substrates.
    • Do not apply exterior if it looks like rain will occur within 4-6 hours of application.
  6. Surface Preparation

    • Mild Steel (Renovation) • Affected areas need to be cleaned back to bright metal and spot primed with NEO Corroguard (cg00).
    • With brush, roller or airless spray, apply a generous coat of NEO Acrylic Wall Primer.
    • Allow to dry 2-3 hours before applying topcoat.
    • Mild Steel (New) and Internal Galvanised Roof Sheeting • Degrease surfaces with NEO Metal Conditioner (mc00) to remove the manufacturer’s grease protective layer. This process is repeated until the surface is water break free.
    • After drying, the whole substrate is coated with NEO Corroguard (cg00).
    • With brush, roller or airless spray, apply a generous coat of NEO Acrylic Wall Primer.
    • Allow to dry 2-3 hours before applying topcoat.
